Who to inform. Once a couple are
separating or have separated they may need
to inform:-
- the landlord or local authority rent
office;
- the local authority housing and
council tax sections;
- the mortgage lender;
- water, gas, electricity and
telephone companies;
- the local social security office;
- the tax office, if the couple are
married or have children;
- current school and future school if
there are children and they are moving;
- bank or any other financial
institution if the couple have a joint
account. It may be advisable;
- for one of the account holders to
freeze the account to prevent the other
withdrawing some;
- or all of the money;
- hire purchase or credit companies;
- insurance companies, particularly if
the couple have joint policies;
- the post office, if it is necessary
to have mail redirected;
- doctor, dentist, child health
clinic.

Divorce
A divorce cannot be applied for until the
couple have been married for at least one
year. There are no exceptions to this rule.
To get divorced in England and Wales, the
marriage must be recognised as valid by
United Kingdom law and one of the partners
must:-
» be living in England or Wales when the
divorce is applied for
» have been living in England or Wales
during the year before the application is
made.
