Right to refuse treatment
A patient can refuse any treatment if s/he
wishes When a patient visits a doctor, this
usually implies consent to examination and
treatment. The doctor cannot act against
specific instructions, so the patient should
tell the doctor about any treatment s/he
does not want.
If there are a number of alternative
treatments which can be used to treat the
patient's condition, the patient should be
given information on these.
However, s/he cannot insist on a particular
treatment if the doctor or consultant thinks
this is not appropriate.
Forcing treatment on a patient against
her/his will is assault. If a patient is
assaulted, s/he should contact the health
authority or the community health council to
make a complaint. |
